Wanting to restore an old photo but don’t know how? Why not try using photoshop?
Restoring old photos may seem challenging; however, it is possible with photoshop. Photoshop from Adobe is a photo-editing, graphic design, and image creation software that can also help restore the old or damaged photos.
How to restore old photos using photoshop?
The process of photo restoration on old and damaged photos, using photoshop software, is time-consuming. However, the length of time consumed is nothing when compared to the result of the photo restoration.
If you are new to photo-editing and if you are planning to restore old and damaged photos using Online Photoshop or PC-installed photoshop software, here are the steps on how to restore old photos like a professional by using photoshop:
#1: Digitize the old photo
The first thing you need to do is to digitize the old photo you want to restore; this means, you need to get a digital copy of the subject photo. To digitize the old photo, you may use a scanner, take a photo of it using a digital camera, or have it scanned using a scanning application on your smartphone.
To make the restoration possible, make sure that the digital copy you have is of high quality.
#2: Upload the image to the Photoshop tool that you are using
At the time you have uploaded the image to the photoshop tool, you need to make a duplicate image. This is to keep the original copy available for photoshopping retake or for the next project.
#3: Remove unnecessary white space, fix the crooked image, and rotate the image (if necessary)
Your next step after creating a second copy of the subject photo, you need to remove the unnecessary white space by cropping the image. Also, cropping the image to a recommended size provides focus to the subject image, which also helps in producing another effect.
If the scan result shows a crooked image, you need to crop the icon and look for straighten icon in the toolbar.
#4: Reduce noise in a photo
Noise in photography is a term used for visual distortion. And to make an old photo new, you have to reduce or remove the noise by using a Noise Reduction filter in photoshop.
- First, click the ‘Filter’ toolbar.
- Second, choose the ‘Noise’ option.
- Then, click the ‘Dust and Scratches’ option.
- Slightly increase the rates on Radius pixels and Threshold.
- Return to the ‘Noise’ option and look for ‘Reduce Noise’
- Lastly, adjust the parameters, accordingly.
#5: Fix the damaged areas
After reducing the noise in the photo, the next step you need to do is fix the imperfections or the damaged areas, especially the stubborn-to-fix photo damages, by using the following tools:
- Patch tool
- Clone stamp
- Spot healing brush
Depending on the severity of the damage, use the tools accordingly.
#6: Fix the color
The last step in photo restoration is improving the tone and vibrancy of the photo. You may choose the automatic settings on photoshop’s tone, contrast, and color settings, or you can do the adjustments manually.
Then, you are done with the photo restoration but do not forget to save the edited photo.
